The Experience

We’d barely made it past the tram stop when our guide, Selin, grinned and handed out scarves for the Blue Mosque. She showed us how to wrap them — I fumbled mine, and an older woman nearby just smiled and fixed it for me. Inside, it was all soft light and the low hum of voices, carpets underfoot that felt oddly springy. The call to prayer drifted in from somewhere — not loud, but enough to make you pause. I kept looking up at those blue tiles, thinking they almost looked wet in the morning light.

Afterwards we wandered through Sultanahmet Square, Selin pointing out where sultans once paraded (and where teenagers now take selfies). Istanbul’s weather was shifting every hour — sun one minute, then a cool breeze off the Bosphorus that made me zip my jacket. We stopped by Sogukcesme Street, leaning against old wooden houses while Selin described what life was like here centuries ago. It’s strange to stand somewhere so old and hear traffic horns just beyond the palace walls. Even now, I still think about that view from Topkapi’s terrace over the water — not dramatic exactly, but kind of haunting.
