The Experience

We slid into the back seat just as the car’s AC kicked in — honestly, I was grateful for that little blast of cool air after the sun at Kusadası Port. Ayşe pointed out faded mosaics in the Terrace Houses (she called them “the fancy apartments,” which made me laugh), and I remember running my fingers along a piece of cool stone just because it felt real. The Library of Celsus looked almost theatrical against that blue sky. We paused in its shadow while she explained how people once gathered here to read or gossip — maybe both.

I didn’t expect to feel much at the House of the Virgin Mary, but there was this hush among everyone there. A faint smell of candles drifted by, and some visitors left folded notes near the wall — wishes or prayers? Hard to say.
