The Experience

We’d barely left Kusadasi port when our guide, Cem, pointed out the castle perched on Pigeon Island—he called it Güvercinada. The Aegean was just waking up, kind of hazy blue, and I remember thinking how odd it felt to start a Bible study tour somewhere that looked so much like a postcard. Cem joked about pirates once hiding there (I believed him), then we passed the old caravanserai—its stone arches still echoing with some kind of history I couldn’t quite place. The drive was short but I kept catching whiffs of sea air mixed with something floral—maybe jasmine? Not sure.

The House of the Virgin Mary is quieter than I expected. There’s this hush in the air—nobody really talks above a whisper. Inside, candles flicker and you can smell old stone and melted wax. Cem explained how pilgrims come from all over, even popes have visited (he rattled off their names; I forgot most). I tried to picture Mary here, away from everything she’d known. It’s not dramatic or showy—just peaceful. We left a wish on the wall outside; mine felt small compared to what others had written.

Ephesus itself is… well, it’s huge. Bigger than I thought. We walked along Marble Street where chariot grooves are still visible—Cem traced them with his shoe and laughed when I almost tripped on a loose stone (classic me). He read a bit from Paul’s letters right there in the Agora; hearing scripture in the place it was written hits different, you know? The Great Theater looms over everything—I tried to imagine 20,000 people shouting for gladiators but all we heard were birds and someone playing flute way off near the Celsus Library. There’s so much detail everywhere: faded mosaics underfoot, columns worn smooth by thousands of hands.

Lunch was out in the countryside—a simple meal but honestly one of my favorites on this trip. Fresh bread still warm, olives that tasted almost sweet, tomato salad with herbs I couldn’t name. Our driver told us about his grandmother making olive oil every autumn; he mimed crushing olives between his palms and grinned when we asked for seconds. Afterward we visited St John’s Basilica—the ruins are scattered but you can feel why people kept coming here for centuries.

The Temple of Artemis is mostly just fragments now but standing there you get this weird sense of time folding over itself—Greek columns next to Christian stories next to modern tourists snapping photos (guilty). On the way back Cem gave us tips for haggling at Kusadasi Shopping Center—not that I’m any good at it—and made sure we got back to port early enough that I didn’t have to check my watch every five minutes.
