The Experience
Your guide meets you at Kusadasi port and drives you directly to Ephesus, the largest open-air museum in Turkey. The Library of Celsus, with its remarkably restored facade, is probably the most photographed monument here—originally built between 115 and 125 AD. You'll walk the Great Theatre, where St. Paul preached and gladiators once fought; it originally held 25,000 people. The route also takes in the Temple of Hadrian, Odeon Temple, Fountain of Trajan, Scholastica Baths, the agora and Temple of Domitian, all standing along the ancient marble roads.
After lunch in a local Turkish restaurant, the tour continues to the House of the Virgin Mary, where Mary was brought by the apostle John after the resurrection of Christ and spent her final days. You'll also see the Temple of Artemis and pass the Basilica of St. John. The guide points out the Kusadasi Caravanserai and shopping center, both within 5 minutes' walk of the port if you want to explore after the tour ends. Kusadasi Castle, also called Pigeon Island, sits next to the port and is visible from your boat.
Entry tickets to Ephesus are arranged in advance, so you walk past the lines at the gate.
