The experience

How do you fit Ephesus into a port day without renting a car or joining a crowd? A private guide picks you up at the cruise terminal or your hotel and handles the route while you move through the sites. The tour runs five hours and covers the major ruins of the ancient city (the Library of Celsus, the Scholastica Baths, the Temple of Artemis) plus the House of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage site on a hillside outside the main excavation. The guide speaks English or Spanish and knows which paths to take and where the light is best for photographs.

The Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, stands as scattered marble columns and a platform in a marshy field. The guide explains what stood there and why it mattered. The House of the Virgin Mary is a small stone chapel built over the believed site of Mary's final home, set apart from the archaeological park and reached by a separate road. Both are included in the itinerary, though entry fees to Ephesus and the House are paid separately at each site.

Pickup happens at your cruise terminal or hotel, and the tour is sized for your group alone: no other travelers, no fixed departure time beyond the window your ship allows. A minimum of two people per booking is required. If your ship does not port on the day you booked, you receive a full refund. The guide can accommodate service animals and specialized infant seats are available if you are traveling with young children.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What is the Library of Celsus and why does it matter?

The Library of Celsus is a two-story marble building from the 2nd century AD, one of the largest libraries in the ancient world and the most recognizable ruin in Ephesus. It held thousands of scrolls and stood as a monument to learning. Today its reconstructed facade is the centerpiece of the excavation and the guide explains its original grandeur and how it was destroyed and buried over centuries.

Can I visit Ephesus if I only have a few hours between ship arrivals?

Yes, the five-hour tour is built for cruise passengers and fits inside a typical port day, with pickup at the terminal and return timed to give you buffer before departure. If your ship does not port, the booking is fully refunded, so there is no risk if the schedule changes.

Is the House of the Virgin Mary inside the Ephesus archaeological park?

No, the House of the Virgin Mary is a separate site on a hillside outside the main ruins, reached by a short drive from Ephesus. The guide includes it as a stop on the route, and entry is paid separately from the Ephesus site fee.

What happened to the Temple of Artemis?

The Temple of Artemis was one of the largest and most famous buildings of the ancient world, but it was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over centuries. Today only scattered marble columns and a platform remain in a field outside the city. The guide walks you through the site and describes what archaeologists know about its original scale and why it was so significant.
