The experience
The tour starts with a 20-minute drive to Ephesus, where you walk marble streets lined with some of the most intact Roman public buildings in the Mediterranean. The Library of Celsus, built in the 2nd century A.D. as a memorial to a provincial governor, still stands three stories high. The Grand Theatre, expanded to hold 24,000 spectators in the 1st century A.D., dominates the hillside. The Temple of Hadrian and the Baths of Scholastica fill the gaps between them. Because this is a private tour, you spend as much time as you want photographing, reading plaques or sitting on the ancient stones: no group schedule pushing you forward.
After lunch (traditional Turkish kebap and mezes with soft drinks), you head south to Miletus, an ancient port city that once rivaled Athens. It was home to three of the first Greek philosophers (Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes), and to Hippodamus, the town planner who designed the grid street system copied across the ancient world. Miletus was the most active member of the twelve-city Ionian Confederation until Lydian, Persian and Roman sieges reshaped its power. The ruins show the scale of what was once a city of 80,000 to 100,000 people.
Your final stop is Didyma, a sanctuary, not a city, linked to Miletus by a 19-kilometer sacred road. Dedicated to Apollo as a prophecy center, it served the same role in Anatolia that Delphi held in Greece. The name means "twins," after the legend that Zeus and Leto met here to conceive Apollo and Artemis. The site is quieter than Ephesus and less excavated, which means you see both the grandeur and the unfinished work of restoration. If you visit in September or October, cotton fields line the drive to Didyma. Your guide brings you back to Kusadasi port or city center at the time you agreed on at the start.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 7 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What is the Library of Celsus and why is it still standing when so many Roman buildings have fallen?
The Library of Celsus was built around 135 A.D. by a wealthy Roman to honor his father, the proconsul of Asia. Its front facade was constructed as a monumental tomb, which is why it survived earthquakes that toppled other structures around it. The back wall was built into the hillside for support. It is one of the best-preserved Roman buildings outside Italy.
How much walking is involved at each of the three sites?
Ephesus requires the most walking. You move across marble streets between multiple buildings spread across the hillside, with some steep sections. Miletus and Didyma involve less walking but still require moving across uneven ground and climbing low hills to see the ruins. Comfortable shoes and water are essential.
Will I have time to see everything at Ephesus, or do I have to choose?
Because you control the pace on a private tour, you can see the main sites (the Library, the Grand Theatre, the Temple of Hadrian and the Baths of Scholastica), in the time you spend there. Many travelers spend two to three hours at Ephesus alone, which is enough to walk the main streets and enter the key buildings without rushing.
What happens if my cruise ship is delayed and I'm not back by the scheduled return time?
The tour guarantees on-time return to the port. Your guide will know your ship's departure time when you book and will plan the day around it, so you have a buffer to get back safely.
Is there shade at these sites, or will I be in the sun the whole time?
Ephesus has some shaded areas under trees and colonnades, but much of the walking is in open sun. Miletus and Didyma have fewer trees and less shelter. Bring a hat, sunscreen and at least two liters of water per person, especially if you visit in summer.
