The Experience

"You’ll want to slow down here — the light does something special," our guide Murat shouted over his shoulder as we rattled into Swords Valley. I’d never been on an ATV before, so my hands were stiff on the handles at first (and I probably looked ridiculous in the helmet). But something about the way the dust smelled — dry, almost like warm bread crust — made me forget how nervous I was. The wind felt cooler than I expected for late afternoon, and every so often you’d catch a whiff of wild sage or maybe it was just the engine? Hard to tell. Murat kept pointing out rock shapes that looked like animals; I only saw one that actually resembled a camel, but he swore there were more.

We stopped at a place he called Girls Monastery — the stones all pinkish-grey in the low sun, with silence except for distant laughter from another group somewhere out of sight. He told us a story about nuns hiding there centuries ago; I’m not sure if it was true or just local legend, but it stuck with me anyway. The ride through Çavuşin Old Village was bumpier than I’d expected (my teeth are still grateful for the helmet), and we waved at two kids who ran alongside us yelling “merhaba!” until we turned toward Love Valley. That part felt almost unreal — those tall rocks catching gold light, and everyone got quiet for a minute without anyone saying why.

The last stretch back toward Göreme was fast and a little wild; by then my hands had relaxed and I didn’t care about dust in my shoes. Murat handed out bottled water at the end — he said “for your throat after all this Cappadocia adventure,” which made everyone laugh because yeah, you do get thirsty fast out here. I keep thinking about that sunset color on the stone and how different everything looked once you got off the main road. If you’re looking for a day trip in Cappadocia that isn’t just walking behind crowds, this is probably it.
