The experience

Six to seven hours means you cover the Red Tour's main stops in a single morning and early afternoon. The day starts at Zelve Open-Air Museum, a site 4 kilometers from Göreme where cave dwellings, rock-hewn churches and monasteries sit among towering fairy chimneys. The geological formations Cappadocia is known for. From there you move through Paşabağ (also called Monks Valley), where double and triple mushroom-shaped rock formations once sheltered early Christian monks in hermit caves carved into the stone. Devrent Valley follows, nicknamed "Imagination Valley" for its fantastical rock shapes that resemble camels, dolphins and human figures, with no ancient structures to distract from the natural sculpture park itself. You'll also see a panoramic viewpoint of Uchisar Castle, Cappadocia's highest natural point, and pass through Avanos, a pottery town on the Kızılırmak River where you stop for a pottery workshop at Chez Galip, one of the region's legendary ceramic studios.

Lunch is included during the tour. After the morning and early afternoon of walking and viewing, you're dropped at your hotel to rest before the evening ceremony. At 5:30 PM, pickup returns you for the Whirling Dervishes Ceremony, which runs from 6 PM to 7 PM. The Sema is a seven-part ritual inspired by Rumi's teachings: it opens with Quranic recitation, moves through sacred chants and flute improvisation, and includes four salutes representing spiritual awakening. The semazen (the whirling dervish) wears a tall hat symbolizing the ego's tombstone and a white robe as its shroud, with his right hand raised to the heavens and left turned toward the earth. A physical prayer that is more ceremony than performance.

Your guide speaks English throughout the day. Hotel transfers are included both for the morning tour and the evening pickup. If you choose the option with museum tickets, Zelve and Paşabağ entry is covered. Without it, you view the sites from outside or skip them. The pottery workshop at Chez Galip is part of the tour, though the showroom is open if you want to browse or buy handmade pieces afterward.

Top questions

What exactly happens during the Whirling Dervishes Ceremony?

The Sema ceremony is a one-hour spiritual ritual performed by trained semazens. It includes Quranic recitation, sacred chants, flute improvisation, and four salutes, with the central whirling representing the soul's journey toward the Divine. It is a prayer in motion rather than a theatrical performance.

Do I need to buy the museum tickets, or can I do the tour without them?

Museum tickets are optional and chosen at checkout. With them, you enter Zelve Open-Air Museum and Paşabağ. Without them, you view the sites from outside or skip them. The rest of the tour (Devrent Valley, Uchisar Castle viewpoint, Avanos and the pottery workshop) proceeds either way.

How much walking is involved at each stop?

Zelve and Paşabağ involve strolling through open-air museum grounds with uneven terrain and rock formations; Devrent Valley is a walk through a natural valley with fantastical rock shapes; Uchisar Castle is a panoramic viewpoint with no climbing required. The pottery workshop is indoors. Suitable for all fitness levels, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller.

What is included in the lunch?

Lunch is included during the tour, though the specific menu is not detailed in the itinerary. It is served at a stop during the morning and early afternoon portion of the day.

Can I explore the pottery showroom at Chez Galip after the workshop?

Yes, after the pottery workshop you are welcome to explore the showroom and shop for handmade pieces, though purchases are separate from the tour cost.
