The experience

The pickup arrives about an hour before sunrise. You're still half-asleep when the driver hands you a snack pack (cake, fruit juice, something to settle your stomach before you're airborne), and the van winds through the dark toward the launch field outside Goreme. By the time you arrive, the ground crew is already inflating the balloons, their envelopes glowing under work lights like enormous paper lanterns. The flight lasts about an hour, and it moves slower than you'd expect.
