The experience

Your hotel pickup happens in the early morning, and the first stop is a viewpoint over Göreme's fairy chimneys before the crowds arrive. From there the guide takes you into Pigeon Valley, where thousands of pigeon houses are carved into the rock face, for centuries locals lived alongside these birds, and the stone walls still show the marks of that coexistence. A stop at a jewelry workshop follows, where artisans work volcanic stone by hand, then a crater lake with turquoise water gives you a moment to breathe before the day's main climbs begin.

The Ihlara Valley is the heart of the tour. You walk the panoramic route along the Melendiz River as it winds through a lush gorge, with dramatic rock formations rising on both sides. After lunch (included), the guide takes you to Yaprakhisar to see the finest examples of conical fairy chimneys in the region. The landscape here is open and sculpted. The final stop is Derinkuyu Underground City, one of the deepest ancient cities in the world. You descend eight floors into narrow tunnels and secret rooms carved into the bedrock, walking through the same passages that sheltered people centuries ago.
