The Experience

I nearly lost my shoe in the dust at Goreme Panorama — that’s how the day started. Our guide, Emre, laughed and said it was a good sign for luck in Cappadocia. The sky was that pale blue you only get before noon here, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small looking out over those strange rock shapes. There were other travelers around but everyone went quiet for a second when the wind picked up. It smelled faintly like sage or maybe just dry earth. Anyway, we piled back into the van after too many photos.

Kaymakli Underground City is not for anyone who hates tight spaces — just saying. Emre handed us little flashlights (“for fun,” he grinned) before we ducked inside. The air changed immediately: cooler, almost damp, with this old stone smell that reminded me of cellars back home. He told us stories about families hiding down here centuries ago — apparently they even kept pigeons underground? That part made me laugh but also kind of sad thinking about how scared people must’ve been. My knees got dusty from crouching through one tunnel (I’m taller than I thought), and there was a moment where all you could hear was our breathing and Emre’s voice echoing off the walls.

The drive to Ihlara Valley felt long but somehow peaceful — fields rolling by, a few sheep scattered around. When we finally got out to walk along the river at the bottom of the canyon, it felt like stepping into another world: green everywhere, birds darting between trees. There were old churches carved right into the cliffs; Emre pointed out faded frescoes and tried to get us to guess what some of them meant (I got one wrong and he teased me for it). Lunch came just after — trout grilled over coals with that smoky taste you can’t fake — sitting outside with our shoes off under a tree. I still think about that view sometimes.

Pigeon Valley was last. By then most of us were quiet again, tired in a good way. You could see hundreds of little holes carved into the cliffs where pigeons used to live — Emre explained how important they were for locals (their eggshells mixed into paint for churches!). The sun was low enough to make everything glow a bit orange. Someone tried to feed a pigeon with leftover bread and it ignored her completely — typical bird behavior.
