The experience

You arrive at the workshop in the Old Town and meet your guide: a local from Antalya who walks you through the history of mosaic art in Turkey and shows you how the craft works. The metal frame of each lamp is completely handmade, which is what sets these apart from mass-produced versions. You'll see the materials laid out: a glass globe, a ceramic base, an LED bulb that runs on standard household current, and trays of large, transparent glass beads in over 30 different colors. The size and clarity of the beads mean your finished lamp will look fuller and brighter than smaller alternatives.

You spend the next two hours choosing your color combinations and designs, then placing each bead into the globe by hand. Turkish tea, coffee, and fresh Turkish delight sit nearby, and pleasant music plays as you work. There's no rush. The pace is yours. Once your lamp is complete, you move to the photography area of the workshop to capture images and video of your finished piece. Then it goes into a protective nylon bag and a hard cardboard box so it travels safely home.
