Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, and Tunis
- Explore Sidi Bou Said cliffside town
- Visit ruins and palace in Carthage
- Tour the Medina of Tunis
The experience
Sidi Bou Said sits on a steep cliff north of Tunis, overlooking the Mediterranean. The entire city is built into the hillside, with flowers draped across nearly every wall and door, hanging vines throughout, and narrow streets that wind between whitewashed buildings. Artists have made their homes here for decades. The place is said to have inspired Paul Klee and André Gide. You walk through the town on foot, taking in the views across the water and the architecture at your own pace during the stop.
Carthage holds the ruins of one of the ancient world's greatest powers. A ticket provides access to roughly ten different historical sites scattered across the area: the sumptuous presidential palace, panoramic viewpoints over Tunis and the gulf, and the remains of temples, theaters and fortifications. You cannot see all of them in a single afternoon, so the guide helps you prioritize the most emblematic sites and explains what you are standing in front of.
The Medina of Tunis is a 12th-century market town built by Berbers near the Gulf of Tunis. It became a thriving commercial center by the thirteenth century and retains that layered character today: traditional architecture and modern life occupying the same narrow streets and squares. The guide leads you through the medina, pointing out the richness of its history and the way the city has held onto its character across centuries.
