Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Roman ruins and local sites
- Visit water temple and aqueduct source
- Stop at ancient Roman aqueduct
- Tour ancient city of Thuburbo Majus
- Eat grilled lamb and Mechiwa salad
- Explore Dougga Roman city ruins
The experience
The tour opens at Zaghouan, where the water temple marks the source of an aqueduct that once carried water to Carthage and other Roman cities across North Africa. A short stop midway shows the ancient aqueduct itself, still visible as it distributed water from Zaghouan to Thuburbo Majus and beyond. The route gives shape to how these three sites connected in the Roman period, not as isolated ruins but as parts of a working infrastructure.
Thuburbo Majus occupies the middle of the day. You walk through the ancient Roman city to see the Capitol, forum, villa of Neptune, temple of Mercury, the Byzantine church, and both the summer and winter baths. The palestra of the Petronii and the market square round out the site. A grilled lamb lunch with Mechiwa salad and Tunisian bread is served here (charged separately). The afternoon drive takes you to Dougga, where seven to eight hours of touring ends at the largest Roman site on the itinerary.
Dougga itself spans 65 hectares and holds some of the best-preserved Roman monuments in North Africa. The Capitol, wind rose, Libyco-Punic mausoleum, temple of Minerva, temple of Saturn and the villa of the trifolium are among the structures you can walk through. The site's UNESCO World Heritage listing reflects the scale and condition of what remains. Your guide navigates the layout and explains what each building was, so the ruins read as a city rather than scattered stones.
