The experience

Hotel pickup gets you into a 4x4 headed south toward El Jem, where the Roman amphitheater rises from the plains: one of the best-preserved in the world. From there the route swings to Matmata, where you'll have lunch and tour one of the underground cave homes still lived in today, a network of dwellings carved into the earth centuries ago. Late afternoon brings you to Douz, the oasis town at the Sahara's edge, where you stay overnight in a 4-star hotel or high-quality 3-star alternative, with dinner included. An optional camel or carriage ride into the desert is available if you want it.

Day two starts with breakfast before you cross Chott El Jerid, the vast salt lake that shimmers with mirages under the sun. A 4x4 ride then takes you deep into the desert to Onk Jemal, the film set built for Star Wars, where you explore the structures and landscape used on screen. Lunch is a three-course meal in Gafsa, a regional hub with local character. The tour concludes with a photo stop in Kairouan, the holy city whose grand mosques and detailed Islamic architecture mark centuries of tradition.

Your guide is a local who knows the region and speaks English, French or German. Meals follow dietary requests: vegetarian options and halal meat are available. Drinks during meals are not included, so budget for those separately. The single room supplement, if you need it, runs roughly 13 euros per night and is paid in cash at the hotel, as is the hotel tax of about 3.50 euros per person.
