The experience
Over two days you move through layers of Tunisian history: Roman, Berber and Islamic. Day one takes you to Zaghouan's water temple, a Roman hydraulic structure that once fed Carthage, then to Makthar, one of the country's largest archaeological sites, much of it still unexcavated. The route climbs to Kesra, the highest village in Tunisia, a Berber settlement perched on a mountain ridge with narrow staircases winding through stone houses that have survived centuries. You end the day at Sebitla (ancient Sufetula), where you'll see the Capitol, forum and public baths of a Roman city, then stay overnight at a 4-star hotel facing the ruins.
Day two moves to Kairouan, the third holiest city in Islam, where you visit the Grand Mosque and its courtyard. The route then passes through El Jem to see North Africa's largest Colosseum (a 3rd-century amphitheater that speaks to the scale of Roman power in the region), and its museum of mosaics. You finish in Sousse, walking the medina's souks and the Ribat, a fortification that still stands guard over the coast. Hotel pickup is included, and a guide fluent in English, Spanish, Italian or French travels with you both days.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour with a guide leading both days, so you move at a set pace through each site rather than exploring on your own schedule. It suits travelers who want historical context and don't want to navigate between archaeological sites alone, and who have two consecutive days available to move through central Tunisia.
