Step-by-step itinerary
Guided bike tour of Carthage sites
- Learn about Punic culture sanctuary
- Discover major Mediterranean port
- Explore Ancient Roman Baths ruins
- Visit Roman Theatre of Carthage
- Optional visit to Byrsa Hill and Saint Louis Cathedral
The experience
Three hours on a bike covers ground a walking tour cannot. You cycle from the Punic sanctuary to the ancient Mediterranean port, then to the Roman Baths, among the largest in the empire, and the Roman Theatre, staying close to the waterfront and away from traffic. The route is designed so you learn about Carthage's Punic culture and Roman history without the stop-and-start of a bus or the fatigue of walking between distant sites. A professional guide leads the group and speaks either English or French.
The bikes are provided: standard green bikes or e-bikes if you want to ride without physical effort. Helmets are included. Byrsa Hill, with its Punic architecture and the Roman conversion of the site, is optional: the group decides together whether to visit, and only if time and weather permit. The Saint Louis Cathedral is visible from the route but not entered. The museum on the hill is closed.
In very high temperatures, Byrsa Hill may be cancelled entirely. Moderate physical fitness is expected for the standard bike. The e-bike removes that requirement. A valid passport is required on the day of travel. Public transportation is available near the starting point if you need it to reach the tour.
