The experience

The tour moves through three separate desert zones in two days: the reg (stony tracks), the erg (sand dunes that stretch to the horizon), and the chott (a salt lake where mirages shimmer across the flats). Day one centers on the Berber villages of Chenini and Guermessa, reached by a 40-minute hike through the landscape. You'll swim in the hot spring near the oasis, stop at Chahbania salt lake to photograph the mirage effect, and have free time to walk the market: haggling is part of the experience. The night is spent in a double tent at a camp in the desert.

Day two takes you to Matmata through Toujane, a Berber village tucked between two mountains, and includes a technical stop at Tamazret café for tea and views of the surrounding terrain. The centerpiece is a visit inside a troglodyte house, where a Berber family welcomes you to see how these homes stay naturally cool year-round. You'll sit with your host over rosemary tea, olive oil and honey, learning about the traditions that have shaped life in southern Tunisia.

Dinner and breakfast are included, along with the evening entertainment on the first night. The 4x4 vehicle handles the rough terrain and the distance between stops. Camel and quad rides are available on site if you want them, though they cost extra.
