The experience

The route starts at 7 a.m. from your Djerba hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. You cross the Chaussée Romaine toward Chahbania salt lake, where the landscape opens into salt flats good for photos. The drive continues to Tataouine's local market, then climbs to Chenini, a Berber village built into a mountainside where lunch is served. From there the vehicle drops you at Sabria, the meeting point in the desert where you meet the camel drivers and dromedaries that will carry you the rest of the way to camp.

The camel trek itself is the heart of day one. You ride across the dunes toward the camp while the sun drops, then spend time sandboarding on the slopes before dinner. The camp cooks sand bread (a local method you can help with), and serves dinner around the fire. You sleep in a tent under open sky, with the camp's support staff nearby. Breakfast comes the next morning before you leave.

Day two moves through different terrain and settlements. After breakfast you travel by vehicle to Douz to see another local market, then to Matmata, where you enter a troglodyte house (a dwelling carved into the rock where locals still live), and visit the Sidi Idriss Hotel, known as a Star Wars filming location. Lunch features local dishes. The final stop is Toujane, a Berber village where traditional culture remains intact. From there the vehicle returns you to Djerba by late afternoon. The guide stays with the group for both days and speaks English, Italian, French or German.
