Clear Kayak Night Tour Krabi: Bioluminescent Plankton
You paddle yourself, and the water below glows with living light.
A 2-hour night kayak tour in Railay, Krabi, where you paddle a clear kayak with LED lights mounted underneath to watch bioluminescent plankton, silverfish and sea creatures in the water below. The tour departs from the Freebird shop on Railay Walking Street; a local guide leads small groups, and all ability levels are welcome with a reasonable level of fitness. Life jacket and paddling instruction are included.
The Experience
What does it feel like to paddle over glowing water? You'll find out on this tour. After meeting at the Freebird shop on Railay Walking Street and getting fitted with a life jacket, you slide into a clear kayak—the hull transparent enough that you see straight down into the water. The guide briefs you on paddling technique, then you push off as the sun sets over the Railay peninsula. The water is calm enough that even first-time kayakers find their rhythm quickly.
Once darkness falls, the LED lights underneath your kayak switch on and illuminate the water column below. That's when the plankton appear—bioluminescent organisms that glow when disturbed, creating a living constellation under your boat. Silverfish dart through the lit water, and depending on the night, other sea creatures move through the beam. The guide steers the group to the best spots and stays close enough to point out what's moving in the water. Every tour is different because the plankton activity and wildlife sightings shift with conditions and the season.
The tour runs 2 hours total and stays on the water for the main event. If you're not staying on Railay, you'll need to take a longtail boat from the mainland to reach the shop—that's a separate cost and booking. Arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and get your gear sorted. A reasonable level of fitness is required; the paddle is steady but not strenuous, and the guide adjusts the pace for the group.
What’s included
- Clear kayak with LED lights mounted underneath.
- paddling instruction.
- life jacket.
- local guide in English or Thai.
- all equipment needed to paddle.
Operated by Freebird Paddle Co.
Is this one for you?You paddle the kayak yourself at your own pace, which suits anyone who wants to be in control of the experience rather than watching from a boat—the guide stays close but you set the rhythm. If you're not a strong swimmer or prefer to sit still while someone else navigates, a traditional longtail boat tour would suit you better.

What exactly is bioluminescent plankton and why does it glow in Railay?
Bioluminescent plankton are tiny organisms that produce their own light through a chemical reaction, and they thrive in the waters around Railay. When your kayak moves through them or the LED light disturbs them, they flash and glow, creating the effect of paddling through stars underwater.
Do I need kayaking experience to join this tour?
No—all ability levels are welcome. The guide gives paddling instruction before you set out, and the water is calm. You do need a reasonable level of fitness to paddle for 2 hours, but the pace is manageable for most people.
Can children go on the clear kayak night tour?
Yes, ages 7 to 99 are welcome. Children can share a paddleboard with an adult, or if a child wants their own kayak, book them as an adult. A moderate level of fitness is still required.
What happens if I'm staying on the mainland and not on Railay?
You'll need to arrange a longtail boat to and from Railay to reach the Freebird shop on Railay Walking Street. Public transportation options are available nearby, and the shop can advise on longtail boat services when you book.
What's included in the tour price?
The tour includes the clear kayak, paddling instruction, a life jacket, and a local guide who speaks English or Thai. You do not need to bring your own gear.
How long does the whole experience take, including setup?
Plan for 2 hours on the water. Arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and prepare, so allow roughly 2.5 hours total from when you arrive at the shop.
