The experience
Hotel pickup starts the day. Your guide collects you from Ao Nang, Ao Nammao, Tub Kaek, Klong Muang or Krabi town and drives you to Bor Thor village. Once there, you'll have coffee and tea while the guide walks you through kayaking technique. Then you're in the sit-on-top kayak, paddling into the mangrove ecosystem where the water is shallow and the trees crowd the shoreline. This part of the day is about moving through the landscape slowly enough to notice it: the wildlife in the roots, the way the forest changes as you go deeper.
The caves are the centerpiece. Lod Cave is a tunnel that runs beneath the cliffs. You paddle underneath the rock, and the stalactites and stalagmites hang above and rise from the floor. Pee Hua Toh Cave is where the prehistoric paintings are, handprints and figures left on the rock face that date back centuries. After the morning paddle, you'll eat lunch at a local restaurant, a break before the afternoon leg. The second half of the day takes you further into the mangrove lagoons, the quieter parts where fewer people venture.
The full day runs six to seven hours from pickup to drop-off. You'll have a life jacket and safety gear throughout, and the guide carries a first aid kit. Drinking water and fruit come with lunch. The kayak itself is stable and forgiving: sit-on-top means you're not enclosed, and the guide is there to show you how to move through the water efficiently, not to race you through it.
