The Experience

The first thing I noticed stepping off the boat at Koh Yao Noi was how quiet it felt—just a few scooters humming in the distance and the salty air mixing with a hint of grilled fish from a nearby stall. Our guide, Lek, handed out bikes and helmets with a quick safety check. The pace was easy, nothing rushed. We pedaled through the island’s main market town, where vendors were already setting up for lunch—one lady waved us over to try her sticky rice, but we promised to come back later.

The ride took us past rubber plantations where you could actually hear the soft tap-tap of workers collecting latex. We stopped at a family-run farm surrounded by rice paddies—Lek explained how they rotate crops to keep the soil healthy. The farmer’s dog followed us around, tail wagging. By midday, we reached a quiet stretch of sand. The water was warm enough for a swim, and our picnic lunch was simple but fresh: spicy chicken, papaya salad, and cold watermelon under the shade of a palm tree.

In the afternoon, we cruised along empty roads on the east coast. Every so often you’d catch glimpses of Phang Nga Bay’s limestone cliffs through gaps in the trees. We paused at a palm oil plantation; Lek pointed out how these trees are different from coconut palms—something I’d never noticed before. The last part of the ride was mostly flat and breezy. By late afternoon, legs pleasantly tired, we rolled back towards the pier for our boat ride home—just as some local kids were heading out to play football on the beach.
