The Experience

“Don’t worry about your shoes — barefoot is better for feeling the sea,” Captain Luca grinned as we stepped onto the deck of the Independence. I hesitated, but he was right. The wood felt warm underfoot, and there was this faint smell of espresso from the galley (the chef had just pulled a shot). We’d barely left Koh Samui’s shore when the sails caught a bit of wind and you could hear that low creak — it’s oddly calming, like the boat’s talking to itself.

Our guide, Li, pointed out little islands as we passed them — some names I can’t pronounce (she tried to teach me, but I gave up after three tries). The water was that milky turquoise you only see in postcards. At one point we anchored near Koh Phangan for a swim; I remember how salty the air tasted and how everyone got quiet for a second, just floating. Lunch was this wild spread of seafood canapés and pasta — apparently the chef’s from Naples, which explains why even the bread tasted like something special. Oh, and there was prosecco chilling in a bucket next to the JBL speaker playing old Italian songs.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much — maybe it was the open bar or just being around people who seemed genuinely happy to be there. The crew kept bringing out snacks (and at some point someone handed me butterfly pea flower tea, which turned my tongue blue). There were paddle boards if you wanted them, but honestly I just sat at the bow watching clouds drift over Angthong Marine Park. It’s weird how quickly you forget your phone exists when you’re out here.

On the way back to Samui, Li told us stories about growing up on these islands — her grandfather used to fish right where we’d anchored earlier. The sun started dipping behind some clouds but nobody rushed inside; even after docking, I found myself lingering on deck longer than I meant to. Something about salt on your skin and espresso in your nose sticks with you.
