The experience
The tour picks you up from your Khao Lak hotel at 1:30 p.m. and heads first to Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum, a newly built museum with exhibitions and galleries where your guide explains the local history and what the 2004 tsunami meant to this area. From there you move to Kong Kha Temple to learn about the late King and the pagoda's significance in Thai Buddhism and local belief.
At 4 p.m. the group walks through Takuapa Old Town, where your guide points out the Sino-European architecture that shaped Southern Thailand's colonial period. The tour then reaches the Sunday Street Food Market, where you can sample local Thai dishes (vendors sell everything from grilled seafood to noodles and desserts), and watch local performances. The market is a working neighborhood gathering, not a tourist stage, so you eat what interests you and pay the vendor directly.
You're back at your hotel by 6 p.m. The group stays small, never more than nine people, and your guide speaks English throughout. Light refreshments, bottled water, tea and coffee come with the tour. The only cost beyond the ticket is whatever you choose to eat at the market.
