The Experience

The drive south from Chiang Mai takes you to the granite mass of Doi Inthanon, which sits at the tail of the Himalayan range and rises 8,500 feet above sea level. The national park protects almost 400 bird species along with animals, flowers and faunas across its moist natural environment. You arrive at the base and begin the steep climb toward the summit, which at 10:30 opens onto a surprisingly flat top—misty, cool and breezy. A short walk leads to a small stupa holding the remains of Chao Inthawichayanon, the last independent ruler of Chiang Mai who died in 1897 after the Lanna Kingdom merged with Siam. The Ang-Kha Nature Trail circles the peak, where you see fern and moss alongside white and red rhododendrons that bloom only in January and February.

On the descent you stop at the Twin Pagodas, built by the Thai Air Force to honor the King and Queen's 60th birthday anniversaries, with a visitors' center offering information in Thai and English. The Hmong Tribal Market comes next—a working trade post where local farmers sell vegetables, temperature fruits and flowers grown on their own land. Lunch follows at a local restaurant, then you drive through Baan Khun Klaang, the largest Hmong community on Doi Inthanon, to see the Royal Project initiated by the King to stop hill tribes from growing opium. The flower plantations and organic farmland there are open for photographs and exploration. A further descent brings you to a Karen hill tribe village before the final stop at Wachiratarn Waterfall, where fresh, clear water lets you cool off after the long day.

Your guide speaks English throughout and handles all logistics—pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, park admission, and the route itself. Bring a long-sleeved shirt or jacket; the mountain top stays cool year-round and cold in winter. The return to your hotel happens around 4:30 pm.

Top questions

What is Doi Inthanon and why is it worth visiting from Chiang Mai?

Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest peak at 8,500 feet, sitting at the tail of the Himalayan range. The national park protects almost 400 bird species and is home to animals, flowers and faunas across its moist natural environment. The summit itself is surprisingly flat and cool, and the surrounding trails pass through fern, moss and rhododendrons that bloom in January and February.

What stops are included on this tour and how much time do you spend at each one?

The tour starts at the Doi Inthanon summit around 10:30, where you walk the Ang-Kha Nature Trail to see the stupa and rhododendrons. You then visit the Twin Pagodas, the Hmong Tribal Market (where you can shop), Baan Khun Klaang and its Royal Project farms, a Karen hill tribe village, and Wachiratarn Waterfall for a final stop before returning to your hotel around 4:30 pm. Lunch is served at a local restaurant partway through the day.

Do I need to arrange my own transportation to Doi Inthanon?

No. The tour includes private roundtrip transfer by air-conditioned vehicle from your Chiang Mai hotel, so you don't need a car or public transport. Your guide meets you at your hotel and handles all driving.

What should I bring for the mountain top?

Bring a long-sleeved shirt or jacket because the temperature at the summit stays cool year-round and turns cold during winter. The peak is often misty and breezy, so layers help you stay comfortable while you explore the nature trail and stupa.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Yes. Lunch is served at a local restaurant as part of the tour itinerary. Park admission and an English-speaking guide are also included, though personal expenses like drinks, tips and shopping at the Hmong market are separate.
