Learn to dive where the reef starts at the shoreline

Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a beginner scuba class in Ko Lipe, Thailand, where you learn theory and basic skills in the shallows, then make two dives from the beach. The class runs 4 hours and includes all equipment; guides speak English, Spanish or French; children are welcome from age 10.

The experience

Ko Lipe's reef life starts right off the beach, which is why the instructors here run the DSD program in the shallows instead of a pool. You begin with scuba theory and a short quiz on land, then wade out to practice the skills that matter: clearing your mask underwater, recovering your regulator if it slips free, the mechanics of breathing at depth. Once those basics hold, you move to open water for two dives, still within sight of the sand.

The whole day takes 4 hours. A live guide leads the confined-water drills and both dives. They speak English, Spanish or French. All scuba equipment is included: tank, regulator, BCD, wetsuit if you need one. You bring a swimsuit and towel. The class accepts children from age 10 onward, though the operator notes it is not suitable for pregnant travelers or anyone with cardiovascular concerns. Moderate fitness helps.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (10 to 15 years). Children under 10 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly do I learn in the theory part before we get in the water?

The theory covers the fundamentals of how scuba equipment works, pressure, buoyancy and safety: the essentials you need to understand before you breathe underwater. It ends with a short multiple-choice quiz to make sure the concepts stick.

How deep do the two dives go if I'm a complete beginner?

The dives stay in the shallows off Ko Lipe's beach, shallow enough that you can see the sand and the reef life without descending far. The depth is controlled by your comfort and your instructor's judgment. Beginners typically stay in the range where natural light still reaches the bottom.

Do I need to bring my own gear or is everything provided?

All scuba equipment is included: tank, regulator, buoyancy control device, fins and mask. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. Wetsuits are available if the water feels cold to you.

Is this class available if I'm visiting for just one afternoon?

The class runs 4 hours, so it fits into a free afternoon or a morning before other plans. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need to reach the dive site from elsewhere on the island.
