The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect from a “sticky waterfall”—the name sounded kind of odd, honestly. But we set out early from Chiang Mai, and by the time we reached Mae Kuang reservoir, the air was already thick and warm. Our guide, P’Nok, handed us chilled water bottles and grinned when I hesitated at the edge of the longtail boat. The lake was so still it looked fake. Crossing it felt like cheating time—just a few minutes of cool breeze before we started pedaling.

The cycling part wasn’t too tough, though I’m not exactly Tour de France material. There were bits where my legs burned (P’Nok said “just one more hill” twice—liar), but mostly it was quiet roads with banana trees and those little roadside shrines you see everywhere in northern Thailand. We stopped once for some salty dried mango from Nok’s backpack—I think she packs better snacks than I do for work—and I remember the smell of wet earth after a quick rain shower passed over us. It made everything feel fresh again.

Then came Bua Tong—the Sticky Waterfall itself. It’s not huge or loud like some waterfalls; instead, you can actually climb up the rock face because it’s grippy under your feet (no idea how that works). The water is cold and clear, and there were a couple of local kids showing off by running straight up the rocks while I clung on like a cautious crab. Lunch was simple but honestly perfect: rice, grilled chicken, something spicy that made me sweat more than the bike ride did. We just sat there eating with our hands still wrinkly from the water.

I keep thinking about that feeling—standing halfway up the waterfall with water rushing past my ankles, jungle sounds all around, realizing I hadn’t checked my phone in hours. If you want a day trip from Chiang Mai that’s got some sweat and laughter mixed in (and includes pickup so you don’t have to think too hard), this Sticky Waterfall cycling tour is probably it.

What’s included

Your day includes transport in an air-conditioned vehicle from Chiang Mai to Mae Kuang reservoir, an optional longtail boat ride across the lake to start your cycle route toward Bua Tong waterfall (Sticky Waterfall), use of a bicycle for the ride itself, plenty of trail snacks and cold drinks along the way, plus a group lunch at journey’s end before heading back into town.
