The experience

The day starts before dawn. Hotel pickup gets you to Maeklong Railway Market while vendors are still setting up their stalls on the train tracks themselves. When the train approaches, the awnings and shop fronts collapse back from the rails in minutes. A sight that happens several times a day and draws crowds, but you'll see it happen. The market centers on fresh seafood, and the railway's route through it is the reason the whole thing works as it does.

From there you head to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, about 100 kilometres southwest of Bangkok. Vendors paddle wooden boats loaded with produce, flowers and cooked food through narrow canals, and you move through the water among them. It's become a major tourist draw, but the market itself is still the working hub of the district. A stop at a local Thai house breaks up the morning. You'll learn how coconut sugar is made, a staple ingredient across Thai cooking.

Lunch is included before you move into Ayutthaya proper. Three temples anchor the afternoon. Wat Lokayasutharam holds the largest reclining Buddha image on the island, a 42-meter figure lying in an outdoor brick building with its head turned north and face to the west. Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the holiest temple on the old Royal Palace grounds until the Burmese destroyed the city in 1767. It was the grandest in the capital and served as the model for Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok. Wat Mahathat, built during the Ayutthaya period, enshrined the city's relics at its center and housed the patriarch. All three sit within the Ayutthaya Historical Park.
