The Experience

You know that metallic clang when a market stall pole hits concrete? That’s what snapped me to attention at Maeklong Railway Market. I was standing way too close to the tracks (our guide, Nok, just grinned—she’s clearly seen tourists like me before) when the warning bell sounded. Suddenly, umbrellas folded up like dominoes and vendors shuffled baskets of chilies aside with this practiced calm. The train rolled through so slowly I could see my reflection in its windows, but my heart was pounding anyway. I tried a slice of jackfruit right after—sticky-sweet on my fingers, and somehow it made the whole thing feel even more real.

After that, we drove out past fields that looked half-dreamy in the late sun to Wat Bang Kung. The temple is tangled in roots so thick you have to duck under them to step inside. There’s this faint smell of incense and old stone—plus a Muay Thai warrior statue that looks ready to leap off its pedestal. Nok told us stories about soldiers hiding here centuries ago; I’m not sure how much I believed, but something about the quiet made it easy to imagine.
