The Experience
I didn’t expect to be standing so close to an actual train in the middle of a market. At Maeklong Railway Market, our guide Noi just grinned as the bell sounded—then suddenly vendors started folding up awnings and pulling baskets away from the tracks. The train rolled past slow enough that I could see my own reflection in the metal, but fast enough that I felt my heart thump. The smell of fresh herbs and grilled fish hung in the air even after everything snapped back into place. It was chaotic and weirdly graceful at the same time.
After that, we drove out to Wat Bang Kung. I’d seen photos before but being there was different—the old temple is swallowed up by banyan roots, twisting around the walls like something out of a storybook. Inside it was quiet except for someone softly chanting nearby. I tried to take a photo but ended up just standing there for a minute, feeling the cool stone under my feet. Noi told us how locals believe this spot brings luck if you walk around it three times (I only managed two—got distracted by a cat sleeping on the steps).
Amphawa Floating Market was already buzzing when we arrived. There weren’t as many boats as I pictured (Noi had warned us), but food stalls stretched along both sides of the canal—smoke curling up from tiny grills, people calling out orders in Thai. I tried some grilled squid on a stick (chewy but good) and watched kids toss bread to fish below the wooden walkways. As dusk settled in, we climbed into a little boat for the firefly tour. The river went quiet except for our paddles dipping in and out—and then suddenly there were these tiny lights flickering in the trees along the banks. It felt like someone had strung fairy lights through all the branches just for us. I still think about that view sometimes when city life gets too noisy.
