The Experience

I didn’t realize how much I’d feel walking into the Grand Palace — it’s not just the gold and those sharp rooftops, but the way everything hums with life. Our guide, Nok, met us right at our hotel (which was a relief because Bangkok traffic is… yeah) and she had this gentle way of explaining things without sounding like a textbook. She pointed out tiny details in the palace walls that I would’ve missed — little glass mosaics catching the sun, monks passing by in saffron robes. The air smelled faintly of incense and something sweet I still can’t name.

Wat Phra Kaew was next — home to the Emerald Buddha. Nok told us people come here from all over Thailand just to pray for luck. I tried copying her wai gesture but my hands were awkward; she smiled anyway. The hall was cool and dim compared to outside, which felt like stepping into another world for a minute. After that we headed to Wat Pho, where the Reclining Buddha is so big you have to shuffle sideways to see his feet.
