Bangkok: Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha & Thai Cooking Class
Grand Palace & Thai Cooking in One Day—Market to Table
You spend the morning inside the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, then tour the Bangkok National Museum with a guide. Lunch is on your own at a riverside restaurant. In the afternoon, a tuk-tuk takes you to a local market to shop for ingredients, then you cook four authentic Thai dishes in a class and eat them before heading back. All entry fees, transport, and the cooking class are booked in advance; you just show up.

The Experience
The tuk-tuk ride to the market almost didn't happen. Our guide checked his phone, frowned for a second, then laughed and said the usual driver was running late—so we'd take a different route through the back streets instead. That detour, it turned out, was the best part. We saw the real Bangkok: narrow sois packed with shopfronts, people setting up lunch carts, the smell of grilled fish and lime. By the time we got to the market for the cooking class, we were already inside the city instead of watching it pass by a window. The Grand Palace came first though—the morning light hit the gold spires of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and you could see why people come back to it. The Emerald Buddha itself is smaller than you'd expect, carved from jade centuries ago, sitting in a space so ornate it almost disappears into the detail around it.
After the temple, we walked through the Bangkok National Museum, which sits close enough to the palace that you can move between them without much fuss. The museum holds the country's serious artifacts—sculptures, manuscripts, royal regalia—and a guide walked us through the rooms, pointing out the pieces that matter. It's not a quick skim; there's real history here, and the guide doesn't rush. By midday we stopped for lunch at a restaurant beside the Chao Phraya River, where you can see Wat Arun across the water. That meal wasn't included, so you choose what to eat and what to spend, which actually felt good—no forced group lunch, no compromise on what you want.
The cooking class started in the late afternoon. A tuk-tuk picked us up again and took us to the market—a proper local one, not a tourist version—where the instructor showed us how to pick fresh herbs, chilies, and the other things that go into the dishes we'd cook. Then back to the kitchen, where we made four dishes: a curry, a stir-fry, a soup, and a dessert. The instructor was patient, didn't make you feel rushed, and let you taste as you went. You eat what you make at the end, along with a Thai drink. By that point in the day you're tired but also satisfied—you've been inside the most important temple in the country, walked through a museum, and actually cooked something you'll remember how to make.
