The experience

Four days means three full game drives plus the drive days between parks. Day one takes you from Arusha into Tarangire National Park after breakfast, where the river and swamps draw huge elephant herds. The park holds some of Africa's largest concentrations. You'll also spot Greater Kudu, Fringed-eared Oryx and Ashy Starlings, three rare species found here. The acacia woodland and giant baobab trees frame the landscape while you hunt for wildlife with a picnic lunch on the park floor.

Day two is the long drive to Serengeti, climbing through the farmland and highlands of Karatu and Ngorongoro Conservation Area before descending into the endless plains. You arrive in time for lunch at Tukaone Camps, then head out for an afternoon game drive in the Seronera area: the richest wildlife habitat in the park, where the river draws the broadest range of species. Day three starts with an early breakfast and morning drive before you leave for Ngorongoro with game drive en route, arriving at Octagon Lodge.

Day four is the crater itself. You descend after breakfast and spend the full day on the crater floor, where an estimated 30,000 animals live year-round: wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, hippo, giant elephants, and predators including lions, hyenas, cheetahs and leopard. The crater's permanent water supply and fodder support this density, and you'll eat a picnic lunch there before the late-afternoon drive back to Arusha. Your jeep has a pop-up roof for unobstructed viewing, and your guide speaks English throughout.
