Track lions and elephants across Tanzania's Mkata Floodplains, then meet a Masai community in their village.

A 2-day safari from Zanzibar to Mikumi National Park combines two full days of game viewing across the Mkata Floodplains, a landscape compared to the Serengeti, with a cultural stop at a Masai village. Round-trip flights, accommodation at Stanley's Kopje camp, and all meals are included. On day one, you arrive at Kikoboga Airstrip, drive straight into the park for afternoon wildlife viewing, and spend the night at camp. Day two brings an early game drive, a stop at the Hippo Pool, and an afternoon flight back to Zanzibar.

The experience

The flight from Zanzibar lands you at Kikoboga Airstrip, where your guide meets you and heads straight into Mikumi's heart. The Mkata Floodplains unfold across the windscreen: vast, open grassland where elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, and hyenas roam in their natural patterns. You'll pause for a hot lunch in the bush, then continue the afternoon game drive as the light shifts gold across the savannah. By evening you're back at Stanley's Kopje, a camp built on a rocky outcrop inside the park itself, where dinner and the African sky wait.

The second day starts before dawn with breakfast, then another full game drive focusing on the Mkata Floodplains. Lions, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, and buffaloes appear from termite mounds or, during the rainy season, even from treetops. A hot lunch breaks the viewing, then the route turns toward the Hippo Pool (a watering hole where elephants and lions gather) before the drive to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar.

The Masai village visit sits between the two days of game viewing, letting you step out of the vehicle and into a community's daily life. You'll learn their traditions and lifestyle in a personal setting, not as a rushed stop. Children from age five travel on this tour. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The guide speaks English, French, or German, and round-trip flights, all meals, and accommodation are already in the price.

What animals will I actually see on the Mkata Floodplains?

The Mkata Floodplains hold elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, hyenas, impalas, and warthogs. The landscape is open and wide, often compared to the Serengeti, which means sightings happen regularly across both days of game drives.

Where do I sleep, and what is the camp like?
