The Experience

I was still half-asleep when we got picked up in Zanzibar—5am is not my best hour, but the air felt different, like something was about to happen. The drive to the airport was quiet except for our guide humming softly (I wish I could remember the tune). By 7:15 we were on this tiny plane, watching the ocean fade into green. Landing at Mikumi Airstrip felt like dropping into another world; you step right off the plane and there’s nothing but open sky and that dry grass smell. I didn’t expect to feel so awake so fast.

Our jeep was waiting—dusty already—and we met Joseph, our safari guide. He handed me bottled water and grinned when I tried to say “asante” properly (I probably butchered it). Within minutes we were bumping along through Mikumi, eyes peeled for anything moving. Giraffes just sort of appeared, tall and slow-motion against the pale grass. At one point a herd of zebras blocked the road and Joseph just shrugged, like this happens every day (which I guess it does). Back on the plane at 4:30ish, everyone was quieter than before—maybe tired or just full from everything we’d seen. Even now when I close my eyes I can see those giraffes moving through gold light.
