The experience

The day starts with a boat crossing into the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a protected marine zone where you'll snorkel near a pristine sandbank first. The coral reefs here hold colorful tropical fish and live coral formations you navigate with your own mask and fins. The guide stays in the water with you and points out what moves through the reef. After an hour or so in the water, the boat moves to Niamembe Island, where you wade ashore into coral rag forests (dense, low vegetation that grows on ancient coral rock), and walk through them to a natural swimming pool fed by seawater.

Lunch happens on the boat between stops: a BBQ seafood spread prepared fresh that morning, with local beers and bottled water. The final swim is at Kwale natural lagoon, a tidal pool surrounded by baobab trees where the water stays shallow and clear even at high tide. You'll have time to float and rest here before the return journey. Birdwatching happens on the sandbank during one of the stops: seabirds work the shallows and nest in the area, so you'll see them without leaving the boat or the shore.

The boat is shared with other small groups, and the vehicle that picks you up from your hotel is air-conditioned. A guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language stays with the group the whole day. The snorkeling gear (mask, fins, snorkel) is provided, and you bring only a towel and sunscreen of your own.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (15 to 16 years); Child (3 to 14 years); Infant (under 3): free.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the snorkeling like in Menai Bay, how deep is the water and what will I see?

The sandbank snorkeling happens in shallow water where coral reefs grow. You'll see colorful reef fish, live coral formations and tropical marine life without needing to dive deep. The water is clear enough to see the bottom and the reefs from the surface.

How much time do I actually spend in the water snorkeling versus traveling between stops?

You snorkel near the sandbank for roughly an hour, then travel to Niamembe Island for the forest walk and natural pool swim, then return to Kwale lagoon for a final swim. The boat moves between three main stops across the seven to nine hour day, so snorkeling and swimming make up most of the active time.

What is Kwale natural lagoon and why is it different from the other swimming spots?

Kwale is a tidal pool: a shallow basin of seawater surrounded by baobab trees that fills and drains with the tide. Unlike the open water at the sandbank, the lagoon stays enclosed and the water stays clear and calm, making it a gentler place to float and rest after the morning's snorkeling.

Will I need to walk far on Niamembe Island, and what's the coral rag forest actually like to move through?

Niamembe Island has a coral rag forest (dense, low vegetation that grows on ancient coral rock) between the shore and the natural swimming pool. The walk is short and the forest is a peaceful escape, but it is not a hiking trail. You move through it at an easy pace to reach the pool.

Is the lunch included, and what kind of food should I expect?

Lunch is a BBQ seafood meal prepared fresh and served aboard the boat, with local beers and bottled water included. The food is built around the day's catch and local flavors.

Does the tour operate on a fixed schedule, or can I choose my departure time?

The tour runs as a full-day excursion with hotel pickup included. The guide and boat are shared with other small groups. Departure time is set by the operator, and you'll be picked up from your hotel in the morning.
