Step-by-step itinerary

Dolphins, snorkeling, and beaches

  • Meet dolphins in natural habitat
  • Snorkel at vibrant coral reefs
  • Enjoy seafood lunch at Muyuni Beach
  • Visit Natural Aquarium and see turtles
  • Explore Nungwi Village and fish market
  • Relax at Kendwa Beach until sunset

The experience

If you have a free day in Zanzibar and want to move through the island without arranging transport yourself, this tour strings together five stops that most visitors see separately. You start in the water. A boat takes you out to meet dolphins in their natural habitat, then drops anchor at a coral reef where you'll snorkel among clownfish, parrot fish, napoleon wrasse, anemones and brain corals. The guide stays with you and points out what lives where. The snorkeling gear is provided.

After the reef, the boat heads to Muyuni Beach, where a local chef has prepared a seafood platter and soft drinks are waiting on the sand. From there you move inland to Nungwi Village, where the Natural Aquarium holds sea turtles in a protected lagoon and a guide walks you through their life cycle. You'll also see the fish market and watch craftspeople building traditional wooden dhows by hand. The boats that have worked these waters for centuries. The day ends at Kendwa Beach, one of the island's widest stretches of white sand, where you can swim or rest until the sun drops and the boat returns you to your hotel. The whole arc takes about ten hours.

A live guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language, so language is not a barrier. Children from age one are welcome, and the tour is wheelchair accessible throughout: all areas and surfaces accommodate wheelchairs, and transportation options are adapted. The only thing not included is alcohol. Everything else (entry fees, taxes, the guide, lunch, water and snorkeling equipment) is built into the price.

Is this one for you? This is a shared tour with a guide leading the group through each stop, so you're not navigating on your own. The guide handles the boat, points out what to see underwater, and explains the cultural sites. It suits travelers who want to cover the island's highlights in one day without renting a car or hiring a private driver, and who are comfortable snorkeling in open water with other guests.
