Kayaking Uzi Island: Mangrove tunnels and Swahili village
Paddle mangrove tunnels at your own pace, then walk a working fishing village
Guided kayaking on Uzi Island combines four hours of paddling through mangrove channels with a village visit and lunch. You drive south through Zanzibar's rice paddies and tropical forest, cross a causeway that vanishes at high tide, then kayak tidal waterways while spotting birds and crabs. A trained guide leads the paddle. Afterward you walk Uzi Village, meet locals, and taste coconut rice and grilled fish.

The experience
The day starts with a drive through Zanzibar's south: rice paddies and tropical forest give way to the causeway that connects to Uzi, a road that disappears when the tide comes in. That tidal dependency is the thing that makes Uzi Island what it is: a place cut off from the mainland twice a day, still working as a Swahili fishing community the way it has for centuries. You arrive at the village first, walk through it, meet locals in their homes, and see the seaweed farms and traditional crafts that sustain the island.
Then you paddle. The kayak takes you into mangrove tunnels and through tidal channels, led by a trained guide who knows where the birds nest and where the crabs hide. This is not a race or a fitness test. You set the pace, and the guide watches for wildlife and explains what the mangroves do for the ecosystem. Photographers and nature lovers find the light and the quiet here. Couples often book this for the slowness of it. You spot herons, egrets, crabs moving through the roots, and the occasional fish breaking the surface.
Lunch is coconut rice, grilled fish, chapati and tropical fruit, eaten after you've paddled and walked and learned enough to taste it properly. All kayak gear comes with you. Drinks are provided. The whole thing runs four hours from pickup to drop-off, and the guide speaks English or German.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and German.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.
What's the causeway to Uzi Island like if the tide is high?
The causeway is a road that floods at high tide, so it disappears under water twice a day. Timing your visit around the tide schedule is part of what makes Uzi accessible only to people who plan ahead. It keeps the island quiet and limits the number of visitors who can reach it.
Do I need kayaking experience to paddle here?
No prior experience is required. You paddle at your own pace with a trained guide leading the way, and the mangrove channels are calm and protected. The operator asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness, since you'll be paddling for several hours and walking through the village.
What wildlife might I see while kayaking?
Birds (herons and egrets) are common in the mangrove tunnels, along with crabs moving through the roots and fish in the channels. The guide points out what lives in the ecosystem and explains why the mangroves matter for the island's survival.
What do we eat, and when?
Lunch comes after the kayaking and village walk, and it's coconut rice, grilled fish, chapati and tropical fruit. Snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day.
