The experience
Salaam Cave is a natural limestone formation with a pool of turquoise water inside. You swim in the cave pool itself, and the guide explains the site's history while you're there. The cave stays cool even in the heat of the day, and the water is clear enough to see the bottom. After the cave, you move to Mtende Beach, where the sand is white and the ocean stretches out toward dramatic limestone cliffs that rise from the shoreline. You can swim here too, walk the beach, or simply sit and look at the water.
The tour runs five hours total and includes hotel pickup from wherever you're staying in Zanzibar. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language, and bottled water comes with you throughout the day. Entrance fees at Mtende Beach are covered. Entrance to Salaam Cave is included depending on which option you book at checkout. The private format means the pace is yours. You're not moving on because a larger group is ready, and you can ask the guide about anything that catches your attention.
Children from age two are welcome, and infants can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized infant seat if you request one. The tour involves swimming and walking on sand, so a moderate level of fitness helps. Lunch is not included, so you might want to eat before pickup or bring something to have on the beach.
