Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Jambiani Village culture and skills

  • Walk village streets
  • Visit local house
  • Make coconut milk
  • Visit seaweed farm
  • Learn rope making
  • Visit local healer
  • Taste local cuisine

The experience

You arrive at Jambiani Village and walk the streets with a guide who lives here. The route takes you past houses built in different eras, showing how the settlement has grown, and into homes where you'll see how coconuts move from tree to fiber to rope. You make coconut milk yourself, learning the steps locals have used for generations. The guide explains the role women play in daily village life, in work and in the household, and how tourism has changed the local economy.

The seaweed farms dot the coastline just offshore, and Jambiani supplies a large share of Zanzibar's annual output: around 11,000 tons globally, much of it grown and harvested here, mainly by women. You visit an active farm to see the work up close and understand how it feeds thousands of families. You also learn rope-making skills and visit a local healer to hear about the roots and herbs used in traditional medicine. The day ends in someone's home, where you sit down to an authentic Zanzibar meal cooked by your host.

Hotel pickup is included, and the guide speaks English throughout. Bottled water comes with you, and lunch is part of the experience. The full outing (walking, learning, eating) takes four to six hours, plus two hours for transport to and from your hotel.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and return transport.
  • bottled water throughout the day.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 14 years). Children under 7 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly do I make or try during the tour?

You make coconut milk by hand in a local home, learning the process step by step. You also try rope making using coconut fiber, and you visit a seaweed farm to see how it's grown and harvested. At the end, you eat a full meal of local Zanzibar cuisine cooked in your host's kitchen.

Is this tour just walking and watching, or do I actually participate?

You participate throughout. Making coconut milk and rope are hands-on; you're in the seaweed farm itself, not viewing it from a distance; and you eat the food prepared in the home where you're a guest, not served separately as a tourist.

How much of the tour is walking, and how difficult is it?

The walking is steady but not strenuous. You move through village streets at a normal pace and visit homes and farms nearby. The tour requires at least a moderate level of fitness, and it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

Will I have a private guide, or will there be other tourists?

This is a private tour, so your guide works with you and your group alone. The guide is a local English speaker who lives in Jambiani and knows the village and its people directly.

What is included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, lunch in a local home, and all fees and taxes are included. Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a camera if you'd like to photograph the village and farms.
