Three days inside a Zanzibari household, not watching from outside

A 3-day, 2-night stay in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where you live in a homestay with a local family, cook traditional meals together, visit the village market and beach, and join neighborhood events as they occur. Your host Aisha and a local coordinator in English support the experience, which includes all meals and accommodation in a private room less than 2 km from the coast.

The experience

The homestay sits a short walk from Kizimkazi Beach in the village itself, not in a resort zone. You stay in a private room in Aisha's house. She's a mother of three whose husband fishes and whose family moves through the day on foot, to the market, the beach, the school. The arrangement is built around what locals actually do, not around what tourists expect to see. Breakfast arrives after you wake. Lunch and dinner are cooked in the kitchen where you can join in or watch, and the meals use what came from the market that morning or the ocean the night before.

Each day shapes itself around the activities included: you'll cook local meals with Aisha, walk to the village market, spend time at Kizimkazi Beach with the family, and visit the local school. If neighborhood events are happening (a gathering, a celebration, a market day), you're invited to join. A local coordinator speaks English and is available throughout your stay, so language never blocks you from understanding what's happening or asking questions. Your host speaks Swahili, and the coordinator bridges the gap when you need it.

The homestay offers two room types: Village Stay, which keeps things simple and close to how the family lives day to day, or Comfort Stay, if you want a bit more ease after the activity. Either way, you're in the same household, eating the same meals, moving through the same rhythms. Check-in is after 2 PM on your arrival day. Check-out is before 11 AM on departure. If your dates shift, you can reschedule once for free up to 10 days before, with new dates within two months, subject to availability.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 12 years); Infant (under 5): free.

What's the difference between the Village Stay and Comfort Stay rooms at the homestay?

Village Stay keeps the facilities simple and reflects how the family lives. Comfort Stay offers more ease and amenities. Both put you in Aisha's household eating the same meals and joining the same activities. The difference is in the room itself.

Do I cook the meals myself, or does Aisha cook and I watch?

Cooking local meals is one of the included activities, so you'll be in the kitchen with Aisha. How much you cook and how much you watch is up to you and what feels right each day.

What happens if there are no neighborhood events during my stay?

The included activities (cooking, market visit, beach time with the family, and school visit) happen every day. Neighborhood events are attended if they're happening. If nothing is scheduled during your dates, you still do the core activities with the family.

How far is the homestay from Kizimkazi Beach?

The homestay is less than 2 km from Kizimkazi Beach, about a 20-minute walk. You visit the beach with Aisha and her family as part of the included activities.

Can I arrange a transfer from Stone Town or the airport?

Transfers from Stone Town or the airport are available on request after you book. Contact the homestay to arrange pickup once your dates are confirmed.

What meals are included, and which days do they cover?

All meals during your stay are included: breakfast (starting the morning after arrival), lunch and dinner every day except departure day, when you check out before 11 AM. On your arrival day, check-in is after 2 PM, so breakfast begins the next morning.
