The experience
You start from your Hualien hotel and head north to Chishingtan Beach, a crescent of pebbles facing the Pacific with green mountains rising behind it. The name translates to Seven Stars Lake, a reference to seven small lakes that once dotted the area near Hualien Airport before they were filled in during the Japanese occupation. You have time to walk the water's edge and sit with the ocean view before moving on.
The tour then takes you to Qingshui Cliffs, where the coastline rises dramatically above the water, and into Taroko National Park itself. The roughly 3-hour section inside the park includes a stop at the eastern entrance Arch Gate for photos, a visit to the visitor center, and a scenic drive through approximately 20 kilometers of the most stunning canyon views. You explore Tianxiang, the settlement in the middle of the gorge, where you can see Xiangde Temple, two walking trails, a bridge and watch for monkeys. Note that since the April 2024 earthquake, some sections of the highway inside the park are under repair and vehicle entry is only permitted during specific time windows. Your guide will navigate these restrictions. The Sakur Trail, a 1.35-kilometer walk taking 40 to 60 minutes, winds through forested slopes using natural ecological construction methods. You can choose the easier right path or the more challenging left path based on your stamina. You also visit Gang Tiang Temple, a large Daoist temple in the southern style, where your guide explains how Taiwanese people traditionally communicated with over 1,200 gods and the roots of Chinese cultural practice.
Your guide is a Hualien local with more than 25 years of experience and speaks English or Mandarin. The vehicle is air-conditioned and legally authorized for passenger transport. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. Hotel pickup is included. You return to your hotel at the end of the tour.
