The experience

We’d barely left Hualien when Mr. Chen, our guide, handed me a tiny marble pebble from Qixingtan Beach: smooth and cold, like something you’d keep in your pocket for luck. He laughed when I tried to say “Qixingtan” right (I definitely didn’t), but he just grinned and pointed out the mountains rising behind us. The van smelled faintly of jasmine tea. Someone had brought a thermos. I liked that.

Taroko Gorge is bigger than photos make it look. At one point, we stopped at Shakadang Trail and the air was thick and green, full of birds I couldn’t name. The water there is this wild blue (not quite turquoise, not quite jade), and you can hear it echoing between the marble walls. Our group fell quiet for a while. Sometimes you don’t need to talk much, you know?

I didn’t expect to get a little emotional at the Eternal Spring Shrine. Mr. Chen told us about the workers who built these roads (his voice got softer for a second), and then he just let us stand there as the waterfall misted over everything. Later, at Qingshui Cliffs, the wind whipped my hair around so much I gave up trying to take a decent photo. There’s something about standing where cliffs drop straight into the Pacific that makes you feel small in a good way.

The whole day felt unhurried. We had bottled water stashed in the van and plenty of time to wander or just sit on a rock by the river. Pickup was easy (they came right to our B&B in Hualien) and nobody rushed us back at sunset. I still think about that view down into the gorge when it got quiet again before we drove home.
