The Experience

We’d barely left Hualien when Mr. Chen, our guide, handed me a tiny marble pebble from Qixingtan Beach — smooth and cold, like something you’d keep in your pocket for luck. He laughed when I tried to say “Qixingtan” right (I definitely didn’t), but he just grinned and pointed out the mountains rising behind us. The van smelled faintly of jasmine tea; someone had brought a thermos. I liked that.

Taroko Gorge is bigger than photos make it look. At one point, we stopped at Shakadang Trail and the air was thick and green, full of birds I couldn’t name. The water there is this wild blue — not quite turquoise, not quite jade — and you can hear it echoing between the marble walls. Our group fell quiet for a while.
