The experience

The tour starts with a local breakfast at Shuixiangong Temple, where your guide explains how the site once anchored Tainan's ancient trade. From there you move through a century-old market to sample snacks, then head to the Grand Mazu Temple (the highest-status temple in the city and once a Ming Dynasty prince's residence), where you can make your own talismans by hand. The guide walks you through what each step means and what the symbols represent.

You'll see the cinema with hand-drawn billboards that sparked director Ang Lee's passion for film, and you can buy postcards of the artwork. The tour includes stops at four traditional industries that have existed for centuries: an embroidery shop, a lantern shop, a paper-cutting master, and an incense stick shop. Each one shows a different craft that still operates in the city. A hidden pastry shop offers pineapple cake, and lunch follows at a local stall. The exact spot depends on what's open that day, but options range from noodle shops to braised pork rice. You'll receive one complimentary mochi snack per person. If unavailable, another snack replaces it.

The final stretch takes you through Snail Alley, a narrow passage lined with hidden cafes where the pace naturally slows and installation art of snails rewards a small treasure hunt. The walk ends at Hayashi Department Store, built in 1932 with the city's first elevator still in use. You can ride it and finish with coffee at Lin Cafe inside. Public transportation runs nearby if you need it. The tour suits all fitness levels but isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
