I didn’t really know what to expect from a “custom” day trip in Kaohsiung — I just knew I wanted to see more than the usual postcards. Our guide, Mr. Lin, showed up right on time (I was still finishing my coffee) and asked what we felt like seeing. He had suggestions, but honestly, he seemed happy to just chat with us about what we liked. We started at this memorial center with pagodas — the air smelled faintly of incense and rain on stone. Lin explained the Buddha Tooth Relic inside, and I tried to listen but got distracted by all the tiny carved details everywhere.

Next was a Daoist pagoda, which looked almost painted onto the sky — bright colors, dragons curling around pillars. Lin told us about some old festival traditions; I tried saying one of the names in Mandarin and he laughed (in a nice way). The drive between stops wasn’t long — maybe twenty minutes? — and it felt good just watching scooters zip past and people waving at each other through open shop doors. At Pier-2 Art Center, we wandered through these old warehouses turned into galleries. There was this weird echo inside one hall, like footsteps from someone you couldn’t see. I liked that part more than I expected.

We stopped at The Dome by Light next — 660 square meters of colored glass overhead, sunlight pooling everywhere. It’s hard to describe how it feels standing under that much color; even my shoes looked different in there. By late afternoon, Lin suggested catching sunset by the ocean (he said it’s kind of a Kaohsiung thing), so we went. The sky changed fast — orange then pink then almost purple — and everyone just sort of stood quietly for a minute when the sun dipped down. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
