The experience

Eight hours gives you a full day without rushing through Kaohsiung's mix of old and new. Your English-speaking driver picks you up and handles the route between six stops, so you move through the city without navigating or waiting for public transit. The vehicle comes stocked with bottled water, phone charging and rain gear: small things that matter when you're out all day.

The route opens at Buddha Memorial Hall, where the Fo Guang Buddha sits 108 meters high behind the main hall: the largest bronze sitting Buddha in Asia. From there you head to Zuoying Lianchitan to see the Dragon and Tiger Tower, its brightly colored guardians marking one of CNN's ten reasons to love Kaohsiung. Pier-2 Art Center, a former port warehouse converted into Kaohsiung's most popular art zone, comes next. The transformation from fishmeal storage to gallery space happened over the past decade. The Dome of Light at Formosa Station (a single-piece glass artwork by Narcissus Quagliata spanning the intersection of two MRT lines) brings you into the city's modern side. Xiziwan, on the west side of Shoushan Mountain, closes the day with its harbor views and sunset. Cargo ships moving in and out add movement to the scene. The British Consulate Cultural Park, one of Taiwan's oldest Western-style buildings, rounds out the stops.

Overtime beyond the eight hours runs at an hourly rate you pay directly to the driver. One child safety seat comes free if you need it: mention that when you book. Entrance fees to the sites and meals are separate from the tour price.

What is the Fo Guang Buddha and why does it matter?

The Fo Guang Buddha is a 108-meter-high bronze sitting statue at Buddha Memorial Hall in Kaohsiung, currently the largest and tallest of its kind in Asia. The hall itself, completed in 2011, draws visitors worldwide to see the Buddha, eight pagodas, and the thousand-person photo booth on the grounds.

What is the Dragon and Tiger Tower?

The Dragon and Tiger Tower stands at Zuoying Lianchitan Scenic Area, where two brightly colored dragons and tigers guard the entrance. It was listed by CNN as one of the ten reasons to love Kaohsiung.

What happened to Pier-2 Art Center before it became an art zone?

Pier-2 Art Center started as Kaohsiung Port No. 2 Ferry Terminal in 1973, serving as a warehouse to store fishmeal and sugar for the port. It sat idle after industrial changes, then the city government transformed it into the art zone over the past decade.

What is the Dome of Light at Formosa Station?

The Dome of Light is a single-piece glass public artwork by renowned artist Narcissus Quagliata at Formosa Station, where the red and orange lines of Kaohsiung's MRT intersect. It integrates various glass art techniques and has become a tourist attraction in its own right.
