The experience

You start from your Taipei hotel and spend the morning in the Pingxi area, where coal mining once ruled and now the landscape holds onto its past. The Tiandeng Police Station rises as a 9-meter glass structure lit by nearly 200,000 LEDs: a skylight building that doubles as a light show from 4pm to 7pm (8pm on holidays). Here you can write a wish on a postcard and attach it to a Polaris sky lantern for 150 yuan, which you take home as a souvenir after it's scanned. The lanterns are nothing like the traditional ones. They're a newer take on the old ritual.

Jingtong Station sits at the end of the Pingxi Line, an 80-year-old wooden building where trains still pass through the main street. The station draws crowds for its classical simplicity and the chance to stand on the tracks as the train approaches. The sound carries through every lane. Nearby shops sell chicken rolls, miners' canteen snacks and local produce. Pingxi Old Street runs alongside the railway through hillside houses, mostly traditional shops and snack bars where you'll see locals chatting and the occasional cat or dog wandering past.
