The experience

You start at Zermatt train station, where your guide meets you and leads you through the village itself. The walk covers the history behind the timber chalets and stone chapel, the stories of the mountain guides memorialized in the square, and the ice-cold Matta Vispa river that runs through town. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and you'll have time to photograph the buildings and absorb the Alpine setting before heading upward.

The second half takes you on the Matterhorn Glacier Ride, a 40-minute gondola ascent to the highest mountain station in the Alps. From the viewing platform at the top, you see across three countries: 38 named Alpine peaks and 14 glaciers laid out in a 360-degree panorama. The Glacier Palace sits at the summit with a cinema, dining, and windows onto the Matterhorn's pyramid shape and the Ober Gabelhorn beyond. The pass and rail transport are included. Lunch can be purchased separately by card in the village.

The route is wheelchair accessible, and the gondola accommodates strollers and infants on laps. The four-hour span leaves room for wandering and photographs without rushing the village section or the summit views.
