The experience
You arrive at Place de la Planta, download the Explorial app to your phone, enter the 6-digit game code you received by text, and start whenever you're ready. The riddles guide you from one stop to the next: no guide waiting, no group schedule to follow, just your group and the city. This means you walk at your own pace, take breaks when you want, and spend as long as you like at each landmark without anyone hurrying you along.
The trail threads through Sion's layers. At the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Glarier, riddles sit beneath a Romanesque belfry that has survived fires and centuries of Valais politics. La Grenette, the elegant old grain exchange where farmers once haggled under the arcades, adds a mercantile chapter to the city's story. On the Place du Midi, you move between café terraces and shopfronts where the medieval town gives way to the modern one, with the castle hills of Valère and Tourbillon visible from almost every angle. Each riddle unlocks a piece of Sion's 7,000-year history (the wine, the politics, the architecture), and you compete against your group's score or the city's high score as you solve them.
The app works on iOS or Android and requires a fully charged smartphone with active mobile data (avoid VPNs and city Wi-Fi, which can disconnect the app). Entrance fees are not required. All puzzles relate to public areas. Around 2 hours of light walking covers the whole route, though you control the pace entirely. The game is available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and 18 other languages. Choose your language when you start.
