Small groups.★ 4.96 (450)3hUS$ 191View › I don’t think I’ve ever felt my heart pound like it did standing above that first jump in Chli Schliere. We met our guide at the Interlaken base—he was Swiss but had that easy way of switching between English and German mid-sentence. The group was small, just six of us, all a bit jittery. They handed out wetsuits and helmets (mine smelled faintly like river moss and neoprene), then we piled into a van for the drive to Alpnach. I tried to nap but ended up staring out at the green hills rolling past. It’s funny how you can feel nervous and excited at the same time.
At the canyon’s edge, there was this sharp smell of wet stone and pine needles. The safety talk was longer than I expected—our guide kept repeating “there’s no way out until the end,” which made me laugh nervously. First slide was fast, cold water right down my back. Then came the rappels—one of them so high my hands shook gripping the rope. There were moments when I wanted to chicken out (especially before a 10-meter jump), but somehow everyone cheered each other on. One guy from Zurich shouted “Hoppla!” every time he landed; I still hear that in my head sometimes.
Lunch after felt like a reward—simple sandwiches and a cold drink back at the van, nothing fancy but tasted perfect after three hours of adrenaline and icy water. We swapped stories about who screamed loudest (I think it was me). My legs were jelly by the time we got back to Interlaken base, but there was hot water in the showers and that weird sense of pride you get when you do something you weren’t sure you could pull off. If you’re thinking about this advanced canyoning trip from Interlaken, just know: it’s as real as it gets.
